About us

Rehab Without Walls has developed a strong ethos, based around our fundamental principle “whatever it takes”, which is shared by every member of our team.

How we work – The “Whatever it Takes” approach…

Bespoke and client-centred

  • Our case managers conduct a full assessment of a client’s current situation, needs, goals and priorities and prepare a proposal for case management intervention. Each proposal is bespoke. No two clients are the same, so there are no “template packages”.
  • Case management input is completely adaptable. We can provide anything from very light-touch or single-issue support to intensive involvement, based on a client’s needs and situation.

Adaptable and innovative

  • RWW encourages and supports case managers to ‘think outside the box’ and develop a broad knowledge of services and resources available that may benefit their clients. Our motto, “whatever it takes” promotes a tenacious and creative approach.

Collaboration and communication

  • Our case managers understand that we don’t work with clients in isolation and the best support for our clients very often includes supporting their families too.
  • We recognise the vital importance of building good working relationships with families, solicitors, financial deputies, therapists and other parties involved, to ensure we are all working towards the same goals for our clients.

A positive approach to risk

  • We believe in supporting our clients to have as much freedom of choice as possible and to take positive risks to increase their independence and improve their quality of life.
  • RWW has been consistently commended by both CQC and CARF for its approach to positive risk management.
  • Our risk assessment and risk management process is overseen by Dr Brooks, with the benefit of his combined experience as a neuropsychologist and the director of a community-based case management service.

The emphasis must be on sensible risk appraisal, not striving to avoid all risk, whatever the price, but instead seeking a proper balance [...] What good is it making someone safer if it merely makes them miserable?

Robustness and support

  • Our management team are very hands-on, providing consistent clinical and procedural oversight and advice.
  • Within the RWW team, we have a huge pool of specialist experience, knowledge and resources to call upon. Our case managers can be confident that if they don’t know the answer to something themselves, they know someone who will.
  • With a large team, a robust supervision process and cloud-based document storage, another member of the team can pick up a case instantly, with support from the directors and office staff, in the event of a case manager being on leave or unexpectedly absent. Covering case managers are allocated for planned absences, with a thorough handover to avoid any interruption in case management service.

A safe pair of hands

  • RWW paperwork is widely recognised for its quality, providing clear and comprehensive evidence for litigation. Our highly-experienced office support team help to produce this without additional case management costs.
  • RWW employs an associate case manager with extensive experience in managing directly employed care and support teams, who works alongside the case managers on cases where this is required. As well as adding specialist experience, this helps to reduce costs on these cases.

25 Years and counting… The story of Rehab Without Walls

Rehab Without Walls’ founders, Dr Neil Brooks and Ms Cathy Johnson are case management pioneers.

Their extensive experience in brain injury rehabilitation led them to set up Rehab Without Walls in 1995, to help people to achieve a stable, productive, high quality life in the community and for 25 years they have actively promoted case management as the best way to provide rehabilitation and manage disability following brain injury.

As founder members and former chairs of BABICM, Neil and Cathy continue to be at the heart of the development of industry-wide case management standards and competencies.

Rehab Without Walls grew from these foundations and over the past ¼ century has built a strong nationwide team of case managers who are carefully selected, trained and supported to provide a service we are proud to put our name to.

What people say about us…

I just can’t fault the approach from the staff. They’ve really listened to me and understand the problems I’ve faced. They have helped to get my confidence and self-esteem back. I’ve come a long way.

Client feedback to CQC, May 2018

I have recently supported someone to move to another country. At no time did anyone say it couldn’t be done. With a bit of research and thinking outside the box we came up trumps and we still support that person even though they now live in another country. Anything is possible and that’s our whole ethos.

Staff feedback to CQC, May 2018

There was a meeting at the start so we as a family could all have our say. It’s not just about the person, it involves the whole family. It was good to be listened to for the first time. That’s what I like about Rehab Without Walls. They listen to us.
