CARF is an independent, non-profit organisation, based in the USA, which carries out rigorous surveys of rehabilitation service providers and grants accreditation internationally. Their mission is
“To promote the quality, value and optimal outcomes of services through a consultative accreditation process that centres on the lives of the persons served”.
As one of the most established companies in the relatively young UK case management industry, Rehab Without Walls takes very seriously the role it has to play in the development of industry standards and quality assurance. With a wealth of experience to call upon, our Directors, Dr Neil Brooks and Ms Cathy Johnson, have been instrumental in driving this forward and have worked with CARF since the early 1990s, participating in the development of standards and accreditation for brain injury services in Europe
Rehab Without Walls shares CARF’s ideals and our directors felt that to achieve accreditation would underline our commitment to providing the highest quality case management service. In consultation with CARF, an ambitious triple-programme of accreditation was agreed upon, to cover Rehab Without Walls’ range of case management expertise.
The CARF survey process is a rigorous examination of clinical and business practice. Over two days, two surveyors, selected by CARF for their specialist expertise in the accreditation areas, scrutinise every aspect of the company. While one surveyor visits clients, studies clinical documentation and interviews staff, instructing solicitors and other clinical contacts, the other examines policies, procedures and business plans, to ensure not only good clinical practice, but a sound business foundation.
CARF expects accredited services to continually examine their business and clinical practice for areas to be improved upon and since our first accreditation in 2009 we have worked hard to do just that, including introducing a system of quantifiable outcome measures, to help us to better identify and demonstrate progress made by our clients.
To the enormous credit of our team of case managers, the 2012 survey report found our clinical service faultless. The surveyors also specifically commended Rehab Without Walls for “exemplary conformance to standards” in the area of risk assessment and risk management.
In 2015, we were again awarded full 3-year accreditation and were delighted that we received another “exemplary” commendation, this time for our use of the BABICM competency framework in our own training and development procedures.
As ever, the management and staff at Rehab Without Walls look forward to the challenge of living up to this high praise, providing the best and most cost effective case management service to our clients, and we are confident that we will impress the CARF surveyors again in 2018.
