Rehab Without Walls became involved with Phoebe three years after her husband was killed and her son severely injured in a car accident.
Phoebe suffered a brain injury in the same accident. By the time she regained consciousness her son had been taken into care and placed with foster parents. Phoebe was referred to Rehab Without Walls when there were problems between her, as a mother, and social services and the foster parents who were caring for her son.
Phoebe felt that she was not seeing her son often enough, whilst the socials services staff felt that her behaviour, poor social skills, and inability to look after herself meant that she was unsuitable to care for her son. The situation was further complicated by Phoebe having a poorly organised and trained care team. We immediately began to meet with all involved with Phoebe and her son, both individually and in regular conferences representing Phoebe's interests. We also introduced a new care team and provided them with training.
After 3 ½ years we have now established appropriate access for Phoebe to her son and have a settled support team. We have supported Phoebe when she has wanted to try a dating agency, ensuring that she was safe when meeting new men. We have helped her to budget, organised transport, and worked closely with everyone involved.
Her care package has now significantly reduced as has case management input and Phoebe is now involved in voluntary work. We know that there will continue to be problems in the future, but Phoebe now has the back up and support available to help her cope with whatever the future brings.
